The Odd Slam - Permit, Lookdown, Tripletail & Manatee

We were very honored to have a well traveled group back to the club after a five year hiatus. Tad, Frank, Robert & Frank along with first timers Richard and Jane from Colorado. The fishing was on par to years past with a couple of nice Permit landed and scads of Bonefish. Richard and Jane came down to celebrate Jane’s birthday. Her only goal coming down was to catch ‘a Bonefish on the fly’. Her first day she landed eight. For the veterans, the addition of a Tripletail and Lookdown Jack made for a very unique, if not odd combination. Add a sighting of the illusive Manatee and you get the “Odd Slam”. The return group were also extremely pleased with our food program this year and commented a couple of time sthat it was really good on their last visit, but now it was great! The best of any lodge that they had been to in fact. That says a lot coming from a group that fishes warm water all over the world. Thanks guys. Hope to have you back anytime!

Post Tropical Storm Fishing

June Snook

Just wanted to give you an update on the fishing.

We got out on tuesday and William and Joel guided me, they could not
have been more professional and cool. they really wanted to find the fish
and were serious about it.

They put me on some bonefish and snook early in the day, and I landed one
of each and lost a couple of each.

We then ran into some large permit way back in the brackish flats and chased them
for a couple of hours. I had one shot as the fish came flying to the boat after we
had waded for them for a while. I threw it, no dice, but pulled the fly back and the
fly was off balance on the hook. looks like he sucked it in and i missed it.
That was the most fun of the day! I can’t wait to go after permit again.

Like I said, they were so cool and got so excited when we saw these large
permit. So much fun, creeping around silently stalking these fish.

Here are a couple of pics and thank you so much for a great day, and your
professional service. I’ll be back!

Lemon Shark

Spat on by a Lemon Shark

R. Stimac :: April 11 - 18

No Permit, therefore, no picture. Good fish story, though. I played junior guide one day with Victor at the pole. Just the two of us so I had double duty. I was up in the bow ready to take a Permit shot with Victor poling in four feet of water. A five foot Lemon shark was coming from my left ten feet away. As the shark crossed in front of me he turned and came up at me with his mouth open five feet away and spit something at me that hit me in the leg. It seemed like he spit a big chew of tobacco at me. There was a three foot patch of black water around his head when he spit. I looked behind me in the boat, and there was an 8 inch squid on the seat in a pool of black ink!

Then I figured it out. The shark was attacking the squid who went airborn just before Mr Lemon shark closed his jaws. Truth is stranger than fiction.
